Middle Eastern Dance (Belly Dance)

Rakes Shark is the authentic name for Belly Dance. It was a dance created by women for women as a form of child birth preparation. It was thought to have migrated around the 11th century when the Ron or Gypsies left India and traveled throughout the continent. The dance was performed for Kings and Pharaohs in their courts. Moving to American, Belly Dance was first performed in 1893 at the Chicago World’s Fair by a dancer called “Little Egypt.
In Raks Sharkie (Belly Dance) You Will Learn: * Stretches for the body, including basic moves. * Using the mind to remember combinations and routines. * Doing body movement to form a dance to take home.
What to wear: tights or comfortable clothes to move in, slippers for your feet. Bring: shawl or scarf for your hips.
Classes focus on the basics of Belly Dance in a fun and relaxed atmosphere. You will work on simple routines that use basic moves.
Classes run as ongoing four week sessions and are paid for monthly. Thursdays from 5:30-6:30pm Cost: $40 for 4 weeks

Carolyn has been teaching, dancing and performing for 32 years. She has traveled to Egypt to learn the culture and to understand their form of dance. Carolyn has studied with many teachers in her years of dance. She has taken teaching courses from Serena of New York, Ibraham Farrah of New York , plus many more great teachers of M.E.D. Carolyn is a workshop sponsor of M. E. D. in the York area. Once a year she brings in teachers from all over the U. S.
